What to write in a Christmas card

Heartfelt words for everyone from family to colleagues

What to write in a Christmas card

Whether you’re posting warm wishes to loved ones across the sea, or hand-delivering envelopes to your neighbours next door, sending Christmas cards is a time-honoured tradition for a reason. Taking a moment to write heartfelt words can mean so much more than any gift. It’s the perfect opportunity to tell people how much you appreciate them and to spread a little holiday cheer. If you’re struggling to put pen to paper, we’ve gathered our favourite season’s greetings and some helpful hints to make writing cards a joy. Curl up by the fireplace, make yourself a cup of hot chocolate and let the festive words flow.

Make Christmas cards personal

Instead of scribbling out the same words in all your cards, take the time to personalise your festive wishes. Think about the year you’ve shared, special memories together or exciting hopes for the future. Personalising cards turns a chore into a creative process, and the messages inside will mean so much more when that envelope gets opened. Make your card extra special with artistic touches: you could try your hand at calligraphy, paint a festive watercolour pattern on the envelope, or make a blank card beautiful with illustrations.

When to send Christmas Cards

After you’ve carefully crafted your card, make sure it reaches your loved ones in time. If you’re posting your warm wishes, don’t forget to check cut-off dates for postal services. They’ll vary from country to country, so get started sooner rather than later for any international acquaintances. For those lucky enough to receive a hand-delivered card, try sharing them on a special occasion. Perhaps you can cook up a cosy Christmas dinner, or take a wander together to look at the sparkling seasonal lights. For colleagues, leaving the cards until the last day in the office will get the holidays started on a festive foot.

What to write in Christmas Cards

Now to put your warm wishes in writing. A sentimental seasonal update for your grandmother will be very different to a cheeky card for a new festive fling. When writing, try to emulate the tone you use in conversation with that person. If you’re still struggling for inspiration, we’ve prepared some simple examples that are ready to be popped into any blank card. Copy them word-for-word, or tweak with the personal touches we mentioned earlier to suit the style of whoever you’re writing to – from your boss to your best friend.
