Papier's guide to wedding stationery timelines

From what to send and when, to how to thank who, saying YES to your dream wedding stationery should feel blissful. Share your love story – from save the dates to personalised wedding thank you cards – with our guide to wedding stationery timelines, sure to help you perfect your preparation and set the tone for your special day.

Announce your engagement – whenever you're ready

Congratulations – you’re getting married! Now for the little matter of how to share your special news. You may decide to kick off your celebrations by gathering your nearest and dearest to help them get acquainted before the big day. Whether a grand engagement bash is on the cards, or a small and intimate get-together is more your thing, sending engagement party invitations is your first step to forever. From formal to something a little more relaxed, keep details simple like the date and time, location, and RSVP information.

Send your save the dates – 6-12 months before the big day

Reserve space in the calendars of your have-to-be-there guests by sending save the dates by post. Around 12 months ahead is plenty in advance, and gives enough time to make sure they keep your special day clear of plans or – particularly in the summer months – other weddings! Wedding save the dates make the perfect place to start defining your personal wedding stationery aesthetic, and give the first glimpse into how you’ll bring your on-the-day details together.

Luckily for you, if you’d like to customise colours or add elements to our designs, our team can bring your vision to life.

And if you’re still not sure about your perfect paper match, you can order your first sample pack for free!

Jetting off to tie the knot? Send your save the dates as soon as possible so your guests have time to plan their journey.

Post your wedding invitations – at least 2 months before you say ‘I do’

Time to send out the real thing? Share everything from venue location to reception timings by mailing out your wedding invitations. Your final invites should be sent out a minimum of two months before your wedding date, so your guests can get ready to dine and dance in the name of your love. Remember – it’s your special day, but making things easy for your guests is important. Only a few hotels in town or limited transport links to your venue? Better to get ahead so your loved ones have plenty of time to prioritise and book before making special memories.

On the day wedding stationery- 1-2 months

Your wedding invitations are sent and the wedding date is fast approaching, so one to two months in advance is the perfect time to secure your details for the day. Whether you’re showing your guests to their seats or pointing them in the direction of the dancefloor, these are the little touches that’ll make your day feel indisputably yours.

You’ve most likely already got some ideas in mind, and seeing your visions come to life on paper will be even simpler now you’ve made key styling decisions like floral choices and colour schemes. Whether you’re planning on coordinating across your venue or prefer the art of curated clashing, printed table plans, place cards, an order of service, and personalised wedding menus should all be on your list. Just like your wedding save the dates and invitations, your on-the-day stationery should feel like an extension of you as a couple, so remember to have fun!

Share heartfelt thanks – within 6 weeks after your wedding

You're back at home but not quite back down from cloud nine. The good news is your wedding doesn’t have to end on your big day. Whether you’re about to head off on honeymoon or are still unwrapping gifts, show your appreciation to the special people that made it so memorable with handwritten wedding thank you cards. It may feel like a daunting task – especially for those with sizable guest lists – but sitting down to write messages of thanks makes a lovely way to reminisce as a couple. Sending thank yous within four to six weeks will take a weight off your mind, and avoid offending any guests that may think they’ve been forgotten.
