Knowing what to write in a sympathy card is difficult for everyone. We search for the right words we hope will comfort the recipient whilst agonizing that we might say something to upset them. Although it might take a little more thought and care than writing a birthday card, a sympathy card really is worth sending to show that you’re there for the recipient.
Everyone’s experience of loss will be different and there’s not one rule for all to follow, but below are a variety of different ideas for messages and phrases that could be a starting point for you to write a sympathy card to those who have sadly lost a father, mother, husband, wife, or anyone close to them.
I am so sorry to hear about your loss.
I’m thinking of you and the family and sending lots of love.
We’re utterly heartbroken, [name] was a wonderful soul. They will be dearly missed.

We’re remembering [name] and all the wonderful times we had together.
We are celebrating their beautiful life which we feel very fortunate to have been a part of.
Thinking of you in this difficult time.
He/she was a beautiful person and will be greatly missed by everyone who ever met him/her.
We all loved [name] so very much and will miss them forever.
Holding you close in our thoughts.
My heart goes out to you.
What a wonderful person your dad was. Although I only met him a few times, I still remember those occasions so clearly and fondly because of his warmth and friendliness.
We’re sure that everything you did for her in those last few weeks she was eternally grateful for.
You were your mother’s pride and joy and she loved you so much. She appreciated everything you did for her.
The wonderful, caring characteristics of your dad all live on in you.
I’m so sorry for you and I’m so sad I was never able to meet your mother. From what you’ve told me she sounds like the most incredible person and just like you.
I hope you find comfort in all the beautiful memories you have of your dad.
Let me know if there’s anything at all I can do, I’m here to help.
Please don’t hesitate to call me if you need anything or if there’s anything I can do to help.
Whether it’s bringing over dinner for you and the family, doing any chores, or just listening to you talk, I’m here for whatever you need.
We’re here to do whatever you need of us
I’m sorry I can’t be closer to you at this time, but whenever you want to call on the phone or on video, I’m here.
Nothing I will say will take the pain away but I want you to know that I am here to do whatever I can to help and comfort you.
This will take time to heal but I’m with you every step of the way.
My shoulder is here to cry on and to help carry you.
All our heartfelt sympathies,
All our love,
My deepest condolences,
Thinking of you,
